Kim Vergil

Like a dream my work is created from the great collection of imagery that comes from the unconscious. This piece was done using a technique called “Painting from the Unconscious” that I studied under Artist Lise Fradet. The idea is to tap into my unconscious energy and release it onto the canvas holding back nothing and directing and controlling nothing. I let the paint flow with extended gestures from the source of my most inner being, the unconscious.

Once the paint has been distributed all over the canvas and with no preconceived idea or influence, the conscious me can now stand back and let the images appear, by turning the work in all senses until I start to see the images I choose to honor. Like cloud gazing all of the sudden the images will become clearer. Next is to identify the images and characters that resonate with me the artist and bring them into focus by pushing away the distracting visual noise and accentuating the elements that talk to me as a person. The important part is always to respect and honor the original brush strokes that created the imagery. It must never be fixed, but rather accepted as it has appeared and coaxed into focus. The end result is the finished canvas which is “The Dream”. It has been created the same way a dream is created, from the source of our unconscious image banks, put together without the preconceived intention of the ego, and then placed before us to see, ponder and analyzed, based on our own personal image dictionaries. What I have found so interesting is that like a dream that is shared, we are drawn into the work to look for meaning; these paintings are viewed by all individuals from their own personalized dream image dictionaries and there for mean something totally different to all who stand before them.

These paintings are not paintings of my dreams but rather Pictorial Dreams unto themselves. Ready for all to try and understand their own way.

 “Jazz” 2007, acrylic

The man in the moon is sitting in the corner listening to Jazz. The musician with fu man cu beard and dark glasses speeds through the tune…Soloing high with a little man in his head whispering the song…A couple stand ready to dance the the guy howling to the moon, tune……Music will be made tonight.

“Threshold” 2007, acrylic

I am coming upon an open door into the light straight ahead, or is it a magic looking glass that one can step through. There is a step up with a very small figure standing on the step, tiny figure really, looking over the Threshold into?
To the right I see a figure in a wedding dress standing tall and straight the portrait of which is very regal, nose upturned and eyes closed, like the last moment of concentration before the event. Just behind I can make out a helmet of medieval armor, as if the knight in shining armor stands there just behind or has the bride just removing the helmet or ready to put it on, I am not sure. To the left a nude figure in front of the open door balances on a one legged chair that seems to be made of branches, with the expression of ah…I cannot tell if it is an expression of ecstasy or a scream of fear. The green plant helps support the chair. Within the lit space of the door I see what looks like a vulva suspended in mid air. I feel this is a moment of tension, anticipation, excitement and fear…..

“Against the Tide” 2008, acrylic

Everyone around me is looking East and I am the only one looking to the Ocean in the West. I see an ocean that is one great big globe of water with huge waves. There is a man sitting hovering above the ocean, who has butterfly wings and seems to be crouched over looking deep into the water. Below him the head of a sea monster is just visible. A huge shark man jumps from the water wearing a bowler hat. A horse with wings is swimming in the water among sail boats and sea monsters. A large breasted woman with long flowing long hair is leaning way back over the ocean.

I see a couple in the distance a tall dark man affectionately hovering over a small woman in a green coat she is tucked under his arm , they are walking into the sunset snuggling. Am I a bird with a large beak and long neck or a woman with a turquoise hat and long black hair? A naked pregnant woman stands to my left head in a great big dish…And the lonely old man in the corner seems so far far away…..

Woman with crystal Ball” 2008, acrylic, digital photo’s

I am part of this scene the observer that cannot be seen, I am sitting at a small table with a woman in a large flowing dress that has an accentuated collar standing up behind her neck. She is wearing a black pointy had on a mass of red puffy hair. She stares intently into the crystal ball before her on the table. Her lips are painted and voluptuous a large nose hooked down, concentration written all over her face and expression. A bionic man sits opposite us hunched down, head bowed forward trying to see what she sees in the crystal. We wait to hear the predictions.
