International Association for the Study of Dreams

Dear Dreamer,

This year we are celebrating IASD’s birthday. Over the past twenty-five years a small organization of dreamers has grown to encompass the globe. Our efforts have aided hundreds of people worldwide. This year, we are asking you to give IASD a birthday gift!

Why? Because your gifts are applied immediately toward programs which aid other dreamers, and which strengthen the outreach of the organization. Programs such as Research Grant Awards, Student Awards, conference scholarships, Art Awards, and publications are all supported by donations.

In today’s economy, troubled as it may be, we would like to ask that you give even more to IASD than usual. IASD’s strength lies in providing a path toward solutions: Dreams.

Let me share an IASD success story with you, which exemplifies why gifts to IASD really can make a concrete difference. During the first three years of the partnership between IASD and the DreamScience foundation we have been able to provide seven Dream Research Grant Awards totaling $14,900. Grant awards depend totally on private donations received by IASD from donors like you, as well as those received from the DreamScience foundation. Grants are awarded based on research proposals rated by an IASD Research Committee made up of peer researchers. Although each grant is moderate, these grants have fully funded smaller research efforts and prov ided “seed” funding to larger studies, which have in many cases stimulated additional grant funding for those efforts permitting them to proceed where they may not have without the IASD/DSF approval and awards. To date grant awardees are as follows:

  1. "Self-Altering Forms of Awareness in Dreams following Loss and Trauma;" $2500 award to Ming-Ni Lee, MSc, and Don Kuiken, PhD. at the University of Albertaat the University of Alberta:

  2. "The Relationship between Subjective Sleep Complaints and Disturbed Dreaming to Daily Levels of Stress, Coping and Emotional Regulation"; $2500 award to Ross Levin and Gary Fireman

  3.  “Effects of REM sleep deprivation on dreaming and episodic memory”; $3000 award to Canadian researchers Philippe Stenstrom, M.Sc. and Tore Nielsen, PhD. at the Sleep Research Centre, Sacré-Coeur Hospital

  4.  “Dream Work in Ongoing Therapy”; $3000 award to the research team of Clara E. Hill, PhD, and Charles J. Gelso, PhD. at the University of Maryland 5) “Emotion and Reflective Awareness in Dreaming: An Integration of Content and Process Approaches”; $2500 grant to the California research team of Tracey L. Kahan, Ph.D. and Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D.

  5.  “Video Game Play, Dream Bizarreness an d Creativity”; Small donation grant of $900 to Canadian researcher Jayne Gackenbach, Ph.D.
