NEWS ITEM - 2007 IASD Regional with
the Nordic and North European Network
for the Study of Dreams a success!

Dreams and Culture

On 7th September 2007, 45 dreamers from a variety of European countries, the USA and Japan arrived in the historic city of Lincoln, England. They had travelled to take part in a weekend regional conference entitled Dreams and Culture. This was the second meeting of the Nordic and North European Network for the Study of Dreams who co-sponsored this event together with IASD and Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln. It was hosted by Kate Adams and co-organised with an international programme team spanning several countries.

Inspired by the annual IASD conferences, this regional took the form of a mini IASD conference in terms of its programme structure and the international composition of its delegates. A call for presentations elicited an impressive number of high quality proposals from people offering research papers, workshops and dream groups. This formed an exciting and busy programme, offering delegates a choice of three parallel sessions over the weekend. Themes included dreams and literature, religion, ESP, education, culture and travel, children and teenagers’ dreams, nightmares, and dreams in professional settings. Students from Europe and the US also created two student seminars where they showcased their work and received encouragement and support from leading academics.

Bernard Welt PhD offered an engaging key note speech on the typology of dream representation in cinema – a highly relevant and visual topic for the conference’s focus on culture. Bernard used entertaining film clips to explore the ways in which the dream plots or sequences are used, and delegates eagerly chatted about his presentation afterwards over drinks.

But it is not a diverse and stimulating programme alone which makes an IASD regional an enjoyable one, but a mixture of wonderful company and good food are also necessary ingredients for a successful recipe. A delightful location also helped. The sun smiled upon us as delegates took an afternoon out to explore the beautiful Roman city, steeped in history with its well preserved architecture from different eras. Crowned with a Norman castle and medieval cathedral, the city offered dreamers a taste of a quintessentially ‘English’ location.

If you are planning to host a regional, you will be guaranteed wonderful support from IASD and its members – so contact Marcia Emery and Robert Gongloff on the Regional Committee and make your dream a reality!
