WHAT DO DREAMS AND COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?
Are you ready for a fun,
one-question survey? The theme of this year's dream conference is “Bringing
Dreams and Community Together.” Robert Gongloff, the conference
host, is interested in hearing your thoughts about the theme. What does the
theme mean to you? What does it mean to bring dreams and community together? How
can we as dreamers bring dreams to the community and community to the dream?
Write your answer on the back of a $10 bill ... no wait, just send your thoughts
and responses to Robert at
robertgongloff@earthlink.net. And do be sure to join us as we unite
with others in community at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, North
Carolina, June 27th through July 1st, for the 27th annual IASD conference.
THE WATERFALLS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
As part of our monthly
series of trivia from North Carolina, we bring you information on one of the
most beautiful aspects of the state, its many waterfalls. And many of them are
within short driving distance from Asheville.
Whitewater Falls, southwest of Brevard, is the highest waterfall in the eastern
United States. Its upper and lower falls have a total drop of almost 700 feet.
For a carwash with a view, drive under the 120-foot tall Bridal Veil Falls along
US Highway 64, near Highlands.
Transylvania County is known as "Land of the Waterfalls." It features Sliding
Rock, a 150-foot natural rock waterslide in the Pisgah National Forest, in
Brevard. It gushes 11,000 gallons of 50 to 60 degree water every minute.
For more information, take a look at the top 20 waterfalls near Asheville at:

AN INVITATION TO HAVE YOUR DREAMS WORKED AT THE IASD CONFERENCE
Susan Marie Scavo or Bill St.Cyr will be offering a workshop at the annual IASD
conference, June 27 – July 1, 2010, Asheville, NC. If you would like to be the
subject of the String Therapy they will be doing at their workshop, in which you
will have your dreams enacted and explored, please contact them. They are
looking for volunteers. For more information, please contact Susan Marie Scavo
or Bill St.Cyr at 802.229.4785 or

IASD LAUNCHES YOU TUBE PROJECT
During 2009 IASD's Board of
Directors set aside funds for the creation of a series of brief videos to be
professionally created and put online at YouTube and other possible venues. The
Board's Executive Committee recently contracted with videographer Tamara Gurbis
of Phenomenal Films to create the first four of these videos, which will be
aired in early June.
Tamara, who made IASD's first promotional video in 2005, will utilize some of
the interviews from this film to create photo montage for brief videos for the
YouTube project. For further details watch for future issues of the Dream
News.
Notice to other IASD photo journalists and videographers: IASD has been blessed
with many excellent photographers and videographers. If you have high quality
film footage about IASD or dreaming that you would like to see turned into an
IASD YouTube video, contact Richard Wilkerson at the IASD office
office@asdreams.org to explore
this possibility. We are also looking for a volunteer who might be willing to
create a report for the IASD Board on what dream-related video is currently
available to online viewers in order for us to provide quality videos with much
needed information.

GLOBAL LUCID DREAMING EXPERIMENT
The School of Metaphysics is seeking a diversity of nationalities and
backgrounds for its GLOBAL LUCID DREAMING EXPERIMENT (GLiDE) that will measure
the effects of spiritual practices on dreaming. Please pass this on to your
friends and acquaintances, dreamers and non-dreamers alike. Register at
www.dreamschool.org before May 25 to participate. The event takes place on May
27, 28, and 29.
DREAMING MAY IMPROVE MEMORY
Recent dream research indicates that dreams can help us solve problems and may
improve our memories. Harvard researchers,
Erin Wamsley and Robert Stickgold, asked 99
people to play a virtual reality maze on the computer. Then half of the
participants took a nap while hooked up to an EEG, a machine measuring brain
waves, while the other participants watched video games. With the aid of the EEG
researchers could tell when the napping participants were dreaming. They then
woke them to ask what they were dreaming about. Then all participants did the
maze test again.
Participants who took a nap showed greater improvement on the maze task than
those who stayed awake between computer sessions. Four of the participants who
thought of the maze just before falling asleep or who had actually dreamed about
the maze, improved 10 times as much as the other nappers. For further

The 2010 Board candidates are as follows:
SUSAN BENSON, Ph.D. (AUSTRALIA)
I have been a member of IASD for over 10 years. I attended my first IASD
conference in 2000 in Washington DC. Since then I have attended conferences in
Berkeley, Montreal and Chicago, and presented at both Montreal and Chicago. I
took up the role of IASD Regional Representative for Australia in 2006.
My association with IASD has been personally and professionally enriching. I
have found the increasing capacity of IASD to function as an international hub
for exchange of information, knowledge, research and education to be exciting.
If chosen to be on the Board, my focus would be on expanding opportunities for
regional contact. I am also interested in training and standards of
certification for dreamwork.
My own background as academic, researcher and counselor is multi-layered, as is
IASD. I have served at senior management level in a national academic research
centre, as well as fulfilled a leadership role for several not-for-profit
community groups. In my current work as educator, researcher, writer, I am
passionate about exploring creative processes through dreams, stories, myths and
imagery.
________________________________________
RYAN HURD (USA)
I am a dream educator living in California, and author of "Sleep Paralysis: A
Dreamer's Guide." I also am the founder and editor of DreamStudies.org, a
consciousness studies portal. My research interests can be found in a heap at
the intersection of anthropology, ecology, and spirituality. I have a MA in
Consciousness Studies from John F. Kennedy University (2008), and a BA in
Anthropology (1998).
I've been a member of the IASD since 2004. Since then, I've attended every
annual conference, and presented at most as well. For the last two years I have
served as the Cultural Track Chair for the Conference Committee. I'm excited for
the chance to serve the IASD.
If elected, I can employ my knowledge of Internet marketing and technology
trends to help with expanding our reach globally. Mostly I intend to listen to
our members, who have a complex array of needs and hopes for the IASD's future.

BARBARA ROUKEMA-KONING, Ph.D. (NETHERLANDS)
I have been working for 21 years as an assistant professor in the field of
Psychology of Religion. In 2008 I quit my job in order to become a student at
the Haden Institute (North Carolina, US) for their course in Jungian Psychology
called Dream Leadership Training. I recently got my certificate there. It is my
next aim to develop programs for dream groups with some target groups, maybe
Spiritual Directors, married (or long term) couples, and/or chronically ill
people.
I became a member of IASD in fall 2006. As an active member of the Dutch
Association for the Study of Dreams (VSD) I can contribute to IASD's worldwide
mission in several ways. At this moment I am the Chair of the Editorial Board of
the Dutch quarterly Dream Journal and also I was elected, in November 2009, as
the President of VSD. In the current Board of the VSD we highly value the
importance of IASD for all our Dream Work in the Netherlands. We strive to make
the relationship between the two organizations as vital and fruitful as
possible. Recently the IASD ethics statement was translated, which we will offer
to our members and after their agreement will be put on our website. Also
members of the Board (myself included), are hosting the 2011 IASD-conference in
our country. I hope to keep on learning more about IASD in order to perform my
duties as a Board member well and to assist IASD's mission.

MOHAMED OMAR SALEM, M.D.
(UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, UAE)
I am an assistant professor in psychiatry, researcher and clinician at the
Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences of the United Arab Emirates University. So
far, I had 4 research projects on dreams and 2 review articles. In teaching, I
was able to introduce topics on dreams in the undergraduate curriculum of
psychiatry in our school of Medicine, and I am trying to promote it in the area.
My other interests include CBT, philosophical and cultural aspects of psychiatry
I joined IASD in 2007 and currently I am the Middle East Regional
Representative. I prepared the Arabic version of the Multilingual International
Gateway of IASD, and I contribute to the Annual Meetings regularly. In 2008 I
had a poster presentation and in 2009 I had an oral presentation for the hot off
the press section. This year I am presenting my 3rd research project. I have
been conducting regular regional workshops on the various aspects of dreams over
the last 3 years, covering Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Dubai, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi
and Bahrain. I was able to recruit some new membership from the area and from
outside. I am looking for extensive collaboration between IASD and across the
main academic Centers of the Middle East.

SCOTT SPARROW, Ed.D. (USA)
When I was 19, I had my first of many lucid "high" dreams. In 1974, I did my
master's thesis on lucid dreaming, and in 1983 I completed a doctoral
dissertation at William and Mary on using dream reliving as a lucid dream
induction strategy. In between, I wrote Lucid Dreaming: Dawning of the Clear
Light (A.R.E., 1976), which explores the spiritual dimensions of lucid dreaming.
After becoming licensed in 1982, I began to develop the Five Star Method. I have
just coauthored a paper on this method (J. of Creativity in Mental Health, in
press). As a professor, I incorporate dream work training into all of my
graduate counseling courses. I have recently founded DreamStar Institute, which
offers certification in dream analysis, and I am currently exploring dream
reliving and middle-of-the-night meditation as a treatment for distressing
nightmares.
I became a member of IASD in 2006 in time to attend my first annual symposium.
Since then, I have presented seven workshops/presentations at IASD annual
conferences, and one paper at the 2009 IASD PsiberDreaming Conference.
I am deeply interested in the mission and continuing work of the IASD. I believe
it is the only organization truly devoted to a multidisciplinary study of
dreams. Consequently, IASD offers its members an array of cross-fertilizing
influences, the sum total of which conveys a sense of true community to those
who are willing to acknowledge that dreams are much bigger than any theory or
method.

MISA TSURUTA (JAPAN)
I joined IASD in 2004 that coincided with the year I entered the doctoral
program in clinical psychology at the New School for Social Research in New
York. My first conference was in Copenhagen where I came to appreciate this
open, warm, and welcoming community.
Since then, I presented at international conferences and regional conferences.
The themes I presented include dreaming in Japan, dance/movement and dreams, and
pregnancy dreams. Currently I work as a counselor and a dance teacher in Tokyo.
At IASD I am involved in Global Advisory Committee, Educational Committee, and
Research Committee and am a reviewer of Cultural/Anthropological Track of the
Asheville 2010 conference. My recent focus is to establish a local dreamers'
community n Japan. I would like to contribute to international promotion of
IASD.

KATJA VALLI, Ph.D. (FINLAND)
I started to conduct dream research in the late 90's, I'm currently working as a
post-doctoral researcher investigating the neural correlates of dream
consciousness. My main research interests are the biological function of sleep
and dreaming, alterations of dream consciousness in different sleep disorders,
and dream content in general, and have published several internationally
peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on these topics. I also review papers
for for several international journals, such as Dreaming and Consciousness and
Cognition, and I'm a consulting editor for the International Journal of Dream
Research.
I attended my first IASD conference in 2000 as a presenter, and became a member
a few years later. Since then, I have attended almost every annual international
conference, and a couple of regionals. Due to my experience in research, I have
been a member of the Research Grant Committee for the past three years. For the
last three years, I have also served as a Board member.
In developing IASD functions, my largest interests lie in drawing scientists and
researchers to IASD, and in building a bridge between research and other
approaches to dreaming. Thus far, the steps taken towards reaching these goals
include reviving the IASD Research Committee, and serving as a Chair of the
committee. If I am re-elected, I will continue these activities, and learn more
about how things work in IASD in order to perform my duties as a Board member as
well as possible.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE ART SHOW SHAPING UP BEAUTIFULLY
As of today I have opened 43 art submission envelopes. Let me tell you that out
of all those pieces of art I have downloaded onto my computer and taken sneak
previews of, the art works being created, based on artists’ night dreams, is
absolutely great. I can tell already that we have material to put a first class
dream art exhibition together again this year.
This is my 3rd year as Dream Art Curator and it is with excitement and
anticipation that I wait for the deadline of the call to artists because I get
to be the first to see what is being created out there in the dream art world.
Each IASD conference site has created a unique and diverse showcase of artistic
talent. There is diverse representation of materials and expressions:
photography, ceramics, painting, drawing, quilting and film. The jury will have
the pleasure and challenge of viewing, evaluating, screening and selecting
wonderful works of art. The fun has just begun and the results will be
fantastic. Till next we meet again surrounded by dream art!

Spotlight on Tokyo and New York City
TOKYO: One April Saturday afternoon the Japanese group met for
the fifth time in Shibuya. The Japanese group consists of three dreamers: Shuhei
Enomoto, IASD Regional Representative of Japan and involved in the Japanese
study group of Embodied Dream Work; Takanari Tajiri, recent Pd.D. graduate from
The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology and translator of Jeremy Taylor’s work
into Japanese, and myself.
This particular meeting was especially lively, including discussions on the
difference between dream work and lucid dreaming and consciousness. One thing
that has materialized out of our discussions is our new dream blog. Each member
takes turns writing about various topics such as dream work, dream journaling,
dream symbolism, lucid dreaming, and our views about and experiences of IASD. Shuhei uploaded the historical first page of the blog that introduced us. Our
future goals are for larger meetings, regional conferences, events with invited
speakers, a newsletter, and dream archives. We look forward to what springs up
from this long-term, evolving project to build a comprehensive Japanese group
connected to IASD.
Misa Taruta
NEW YORK CITY: Misa went from the cool weather of Tokyo to an
unseasonably hot afternoon on Sunday, May 2, in New York City. In town for a
short visit, she kindly took time to meet with us at a lively café inside a
Japanese bookstore. Misa showed us a biography of Myoe Shonin, a Buddhist monk
of the Middle Ages who kept a 40-year dream journal. She introduced us to
several Japanese dream-related words; to the practice, in medieval Japan, of
taking one's dreams to a temple or shrine; and to the mythic animal Baku, who
functions as a sort of dream catcher by eating bad dreams. We New Yorkers were
pleased to be able to ask many questions in this informal session. Turnout was
small, in line with past NYC experience, but Misa's talk provided an opportunity
to publicize IASD to Japanese cultural organizations here. And we expect it to
be the first of a series of IASD-NYC sessions focusing on dreaming in various
cultures.

Regional Activities at the 2010 Conference in NC
Each year at the annual IASD Conference we arrange several lunches for
networking with one another in ways that build our personal connections and
strengthen our dream community. These meetings have generated opportunities for
regional events and meetings. Several of our best regional events have been
spawned in this way.
We will facilitate networking again this year in two ways:
1) A working lunch for the regional reps who are at the conference. Monday,
11:15-1:00.
2) A general membership lunch for all conference attendees to meet at regional
tables and connect to others from their geographic area. Our “at large” reps
will meet with those who don’t have a rep or are in a region without other IASD
members. Wednesday, 11:15-1:00.
Besides imagining and creating your costume for the dream ball in the next
couple of months, consider planning ahead for these regional lunch
opportunities: dream and create ideas for future regional meetings, conferences,
and developments. Bring them to the common tables! We look forward to seeing you
there.
If you do not have a regional rep in your area, consider becoming one. You are
the dream connector you and we have been waiting for!

QUEBEC REGIONAL CONFERENCE A HUGE SUCCESS!
Early Saturday morning, 10 April 2010, 250 pre-registered
participants began to check in to the Quebec regional conference. As they sipped
coffee and drank from water bottles, they buzzed with expectation. Daniel
Deslauriers Ph.D., a member of IASD since 1984 and guest speaker, presented the
opening one-hour address, “Dreams of Transformation.”
Nine other speakers followed throughout the day with 30 minute presentations
each. The program offered something for every taste. The variety of topics
allowed everyone to have their interests addressed. Some attendees considered
new avenues to investigate, research, or contemplate. Response from participants
indicated that the conference format allowed interest to be maintained at a
peak, while the audience remained relaxed and attentive. The event was also a
gratifying for the presenters, who addressed an intensely receptive audience. At
the end of the day, everyone was grateful for a particularly stimulating day and
was looking forward to the next conference.
DREAMING THE MUSE: DREAM NEWS CREATIVE CORNER
The Dharma of Faery Dreaming
Christina Bjergo, Lac
Once upon a time there lived a maiden from the land of suburbia. She grew up in
an environment of reason, responsibility and the pursuit of knowledge through
science. Prompted by destiny and a thirst for deeper understanding she stretched
beyond the boundaries of the material plane and entered a period of tremendous
growth through the practice of mindfulness. Using meditation as her talisman she
broke free of intellectual ego constraints through dreams. Blessings of deep
insight came as she transformed into a Sleeping Beauty of sorts. Purifying
obstacles with the help of angelic beings of Nature she began tearing down the
thorny trenches surrounding her heart. She was granted access to the enchanted
castle of magic, love and miracles. She faced her dragons, reclaimed the lost
treasures of herself (greater health, peace of mind and spiritual maturity
resulted). In the end she symbolically reunites with her Prince and discovered
the secrets of living happily ever after…. For through the Dreamtime journey the
maiden awoke from her hazy lethargy to discover the deeper reality of our
existence. The maiden, with the wisdom of the crone, gives thanks to the fairy
godmothers who visit us in dreams to help guide us home.
