Trauma and Dreams

Distinguished researcher and clinician, Deirdre Barrett, PhD, brings together a unique set of authors to consider how trauma shapes dreaming, and what dreams reveal about the impact of trauma on the human psyche. Trauma and Dreams illuminates the universal and specific impact of many forms of crises and trauma, providing diagnostic and therapeutic insights relevant to health and mental health professionals, clergy, and all who work with or have experienced trauma.

In addition to an introduction and chapter by Dr. Barrett, contributing authors include: Oliver Sacks, Robert Jay Lifton, Ernest Hartmann and Patricia Garfield. The book considers posttraumatic nightmares resulting from diverse forms of trauma including catastrophic events such as combat, political torture, natural disasters, and rape. The book also explores the enduring impact of childhood trauma on later personality and mental functioning, including profound trauma such as sexual abuse and severe burns. Trauma and Dreams also considers the potential traumatic impact of life cycle events such as bereavement, divorce, life-threatening illnesses.

Deirdre Barrett, PhD is affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Past-president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, and Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal Dreaming, published by the American Psychological Association. She is the author of numerous professional publications and books on dreams, hypnosis, and creativity.
