Introduction to Dreams and Nightmares: The New Theory on the Origin and Meaning of Dreams (2nd Edition)

Psychoanalyst and pre-eminent dream researcher, Ernest Hartmann, MD draws on multiple sources in developing his new theory of the origin and meaning of dreams and nightmares. His sources include his clinic practices, decades of research and hundreds of publications on sleep and dreaming, and over 5000 of his own dreams.

Through decades of research and study, Ernest Hartmann developed a theory that elucidates how dreams can help us understand our emotions, gain fundamental insights into our identity, and enhance our self-understanding and sense of meaning. He counters the assertion of some neurological and biological theorists, that dreams are random and meaningless by-products of electrical and chemical activities in the brain. He asserts that dreams are meaningful and provide valuable personal and therapeutic insights.

Trained as psychoanalyst, he goes beyond traditional Freudian notions of dreams as wish fulfillment or reflections of sexual and aggressive emotions. Drawing on many sources, he shows how dreams, guided by the emotions of the dreamer, can help us discover connections between our deeper feelings, and key life issues and conflicts. Hartmann concludes that dreaming, and exploring our dreams, are valuable for gaining crucial insights and reaching our full potential.
