Venue - Rolduc Conference
Center The conference is housed at the former medieval monastery of
Rolduc, Kerkrade, in the Netherlands. It is situated at the
Dutch-German frontier, which can be passed without any
difficulty (Schengen convention of Europe) to the juxtaposed
city of Herzogenrath at less than 1 mile distance of the
conference centre, and 8 miles from Belgium.
Environment
Rolduc Conference Centre is part of an old monastery. The
core of the monastery is the oldest Roman Church of the
Netherlands which dates back to the 11th Century ( historic
overview here ). Around this core new buildings have been
added through the centuries. The atmosphere is typical of a
monastery, plenty of open space to relax, within a scenic
area, inviting to make round walks. The Rolduc Abbey has
played a prominent role in Dutch history, Christian science,
development of Coal Mining (!) and for long time it was tied
to the conservative wing of the Dutch Catholic Church. In
1971, the functionality was split up and since then it
houses an independent, impressive Conference centre, housed
in a serene and inspiring atmosphere.
The centre is located near the Dutch Belgian German triple
boundary at Vaals (7 Miles) and Aachen (4 miles). The so
called Euregio Area has a rich, documented history,
highlights of which date back to the chert industry of the
stone ages 5000 BC, the Roman Period 50 AD with Roman
settlements a.o. in Maastricht Coriovallum (Heerlen), and
the Middle Ages (Carolus Magnus, 9th century built the dome
of Aachen). In the vicinity are several of the oldest if not
the oldest cities of The Netherlands (Maastricht, 20 miles),
Germany (Aachen, 6 miles) and Belgium (Tongeren, 25 miles).
