Past President
www.partriciagarfield.com
Time Together:
A delicious lunch or early dinner with dream discussion of winner's choice.
Gift —$150 value
Personally inscribed copies of 6 of my 10 books
plus...
a surprise treat. |
Why did you become interested in dreams?
When I was 13, my mother was reading books by Freud and Jung and talking about their ideas at dinner. I got intrigued with the notion that dreams were messages. Already a vivid dreamer, I wanted to know what my dream messages were.
How long have you been studying and/or working with dreams?
Since 1948 when my dream journal began at age 14, making nearly 60 years of dream work. In the Ph.D. clinical psychology program at Temple University in Philadelphia, I learned that a dream journal as long as mine was rare. Freud burned his dreams records; Jung wrote his dreams intensely for a limited time. My initial work with dreams led to writing my first book, CREATIVE DREAMING, in 1974; a bestseller, it's been in print ever since.
Do you have a special focus in your study of dreams? If yes, what is that focus?
I continue to be fascinated with the imaginative ways the dreaming mind casts our emotions into images. These condensed feeling-pictures can support and enrich us throughout our waking lives into elder years.
What makes you a “good win” at the auction?
As one of the 6 Co-Founders of IASD and a Past President, I'm familiar with the sweep of the dream canvas from pioneer to elder days. I've written 10 books on dreams, including a bestseller, and continue to draw strength and inspiration from the dream world; I believe this resource is available to all.
Why did you volunteer to participate in the auction?
Because I was asked, and as a Co-Founder I heartily endorse IASD's continuing valuable exploration of dreaming.
Is there something about you that few people know but might find interesting or humorous?
Patricia has the honor of being acquainted with one of the most well-known and popular entertainers of the last 20+ years. A man that everyone loves... Want to know who it is and how they know each other? Bring your bidding money and prepare to have fun!

Why did you become interested in dreams?
In 1970, I took my first undergraduate course in Psychology at Johns Hopkins and learned that both Freud and Jung developed their theories based in part on keeping their own dream journal. How long have you been studying and/or working with dreams?
My interest in dream research grew out of seeing incredible patterns in my own dream journal with especially unique and recurrent themes when I was in a crisis or under stress. My interest in exploring dreams was also inspired by participating in a dream group in 1974, and beginning to lead dream groups in the psychiatric halfway house I where I was working at that time. Entering the Humanistic Psychology program at Sonoma State and doing my Masters on Dream Incubation there in 1976 increased my enthusiasm about dreams. I did my PHD dissertation on expectant father's dreams in 1982 and researched the dreams of the Oakland Firestorm in 1991.
Do you have a special focus in your study of dreams?
My special focus in my writing and research has been on turning point dreams throughout the life cycle--which is a developmental focus looking at how dreams change during crises, transitions and turning points from childhood through to near death dreams and how we can use dreams for inspiration and self-awareness. My book, Dream Wisdom, www.dreamwisdom.info focuses on that topic and looks at dream patterns during pregnancy, marriage, divorce, midlife, trauma, grief, illness and approaching death. I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses on dreams for over 30 years and use an eclectic approach.
What makes you a “good win” at the auction?
I presented at the first IASD conference in 1984 and 16 subsequent conferences. I have been Dream Time editor for 9 years, started and edited IASD E-news for 7 years, have been President, conference program chair or co-chair 4 times, and CE chair for 13 years.

Why did you become interested in dreams?
I was pressured by some graduate students at the University of Denver to offer a course on dreams and I was almost clueless about the area at the time.
How long have you been studying and/or working with dreams?
That first course was in 1960.
Do you have a special focus in your study of dreams?
I have focused primarily on various content analytic studies and also on telepathic dreams. I am currently working on a book entitled When Angels Appear in Dreams.
What makes you a “good win” at the auction?
I am a fantastic conversationalist AND listener and unless you take advantage of this rare opportunity VERY soon, such a unique opportunity may elude you permanently, as I am currently 80 years old. I gave the first Invited Address at the first ASD conference in San Francisco 25 years ago.
Why did you volunteer to participate in the auction?

Why did you become interested in dreams?
I’ve kept a dream journal since the age of twelve. From early on, I took an interest in dream life as a reminder of what we’re forgetting in our waking lives, and as a confirmation of the power of imagination in our understanding of the world. How long have you been studying and/or working with dreams?
I've taken a serious interest in dreams since college and began running dream groups in an undergraduate interdisciplinary humanities course on dreaming in 1985.
Do you have a special focus in your study of dreams?
I try to explore the still-undiscovered implications of the study of dreaming in understanding the arts, imagination, and creativity, especially as manifested in cinema. I am also at work with Kelly Bulkeley and Phil King on "Dreaming in the Classroom, an extensive survey of the topic of dreaming contemporary education.
What makes you a “good win” at the auction?
The same thing that makes me a "bad win." I have an endless supply of little bits of information and big ideas and opinions. And Montreal is one of my favorite cities on earth.
Why did you volunteer to participate in the auction?
Anything to raise money for IASD, keep the discussion of dreams going, and make it a lively conference.
Is there something about you that few people know but might find interesting or humorous?
Did you know that Bernard is a champion? Champion what you ask? Ahhhh...only the winning bidder gets to hear that answer!

Why did you become interested in dreams?
I always liked dreams, and was even horrified as a child that we could so easily forget them, so I started telling them to myself to recall them before I could write them down. I liked them because they were like fairly tales, but with more juice.
How long have you been studying and/or working with dreams?
I think if we call it "dreamwork" I would say the middle 1980's. I became interested in the imagination and counseling aspect, and got into Jungian analysis, where they showed me the basics of dreamwork. I discovered local Bay Area grassroots organizations, like BADG, the Novato Dream Center, and Dream Network publications. About the same time I went to my first IASD conference, 1993, in Santa Fe, and my interests in dreams expanded into many areas. About a year later, I started plans for getting the Dream Movement online.
Do you have a special focus in your study of dreams?
In the past I was pretty eclectic, and have taken something from every theory I have read about dreams. My roots are still Jungian. I was disappointed that the dream movement was kind of by-passed by postmodern/poststructural thinkers, and have been more focused on the theoretical issues that might provide a bridge for dreamwork and poststructural theory. I thought the Internet might provide this bridge, but I'm not so sure about this anymore.
What makes you a “good win” at the auction?
I’m a good listener, want to hear about your dreams.
Why did you volunteer to participate in the auction?
To promote community in IASD. |
