Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and is situated on the large island Zealand, which lies approximately 16 km (10 mi) from Sweden. The strait of water between Denmark and Sweden is called Øresund.

Øresund is also the exciting new metropolis of eastern Denmark and Southern Sweden. In 2000 a new bridge-tunnel linked Copenhagen and Malmø, Sweden’s third largest city, and united the Sound not just for traffic but also economically and culturally. The region has an overall population of 2.9 million of whom approximately 1.7 million people live in Copenhagen.

Founded in 1167 and capital of Denmark since 1417, Copenhagen is the seat of the Danish government and home to the Danish royal family. The reigning monarch, Queen Margrethe II, can trace her ancestry back to the Viking Age, making Denmark the world's oldest kingdom. The total population of Denmark is 5.1 million and the mother language in Denmark is Danish, though English and German are wide-spoken.

Considering the northern latitude, the climate of Copenhagen is fairly mild, and quite similar to that of London or Amsterdam. As a rule July or August are the warmest months. Good indicators of the region's mild weather are the crowds of bicycles in the streets of Copenhagen, and the 260 cafes and restaurants which provide outdoor services from late April until late September.

Foreign visitors experience Copenhagen as very friendly, open and accessible, and highly rank the city as a destination for visits, tourism and conferences, i.e., Copenhageners rank third on the list of "the friendliest population of capital cities in Europe." Picture courtesy of Copenhagen Tourist InfoCopenhagen is rich in history and culture. For pleasure you may experience the more than 150-year-old Tivoli garden in the city centre, which served as the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Disneyland. You may also want to experience Christiansborg Castle and the harbour area where the Queen’s Castle is situated and where the ASD conference takes place. A wealth of contemporary art, culture and design can be experienced inside and just outside Copenhagen. One of the world’s absolutely best-placed and most well- designed Museums of Modern Art, Louisiana, is just north of Copenhagen, with a view across the sea to Sweden. It is placed close to Elsinore (Helsingør) and Kronborg, the venue of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In Copenhagen you can also visit Christiania, an area squatted in 1969, and ever since an alternative community for more than 1000 persons – a city in the city, which is the home of many artists, alternative small scale businesses, as well as old hippies and their children and grandchildren. Christiania also has very nice restaurants
